Issues surrounding public schools have become central in the political arena, especially this year in Duval County, where there was an effort earlier in the year to replace the elected school board with one appointed by Jacksonville’s mayor.
The controversial proposal was one of the recommendations made last February by the Jacksonville Charter Revision Commission. It met with fiery opposition not only from the teachers union, but voters as well. One poll found 82 percent opposed an appointed school board.
The Jacksonville City Council, feeling public pressure, gave the Charter Revision Commission proposal a thumbs down.
